STP 2007 — Seattle to Portland on a Bicycle

Two friends of mine and I just finished the STP — a 200 mile, 2 day bicycle ride from Seattle to Portland.  Our riding time each day was about 6-1/2 hours, with about 2-1/2 hours of stops added on to that.  The terrain was mostly flat, although there were a few good climbs along with rolling hills (especially on the second day).  We left at 6:30 AM on the first day and at about 6:10 AM on the second day.  Following are some pictures from the trip …

Flying Wheels

flying wheels.jpgI’ve been getting into cycling and on Saturday I rode the Flying Wheels Summer Century. I rode the 70 mile route (not the 100) in preparation for the STP, the 200 mile 2 day Seattle to Portland bike ride.  It’s not quite the same as riding the Hog, but lots of fun nonetheless.  I’m definitely looking forward to the STP, though — it’s on 14 July and it’ll be a great way to celebrate my birthday.

I’ve been running 3-4 miles about 5 days a week for a while now, but decided to step it up and see if I could do something like this. My routine was to continue a 4 mile run about 3 times a week and then do a long run on the weekend. The goal? To finish.

And finish I did — no stopping or walking. I trudged the entire 13.1 miles with a finishing time of 2:43:31. No awards for that time, of course, but I felt like it was a pretty great accomplishment.

Probably the most unexpected part was the weather. It looked like it was all teed up to be rainy and miserable today, but to the contrary, it was really a great day to be out for a run.

Me

I realized that I don’t actually have a photo of myself on this site. This image was taken with my Canon G3.

This picture is of the second longest covered bridge in North America. It was taken 1 July 2004 in Waltham, Quebec with my Canon EOS Digital Rebel. Bikers seem to have a thing for covered bridges, myself included.

You might be able to tell from these images that I have a thing for motorcycling. My current ride is a 2004 Harley Davidson Road King.
