Cellphone Games

Game developer Monkeystone has announced that it will begin producing games for Qualcomm phones using the BREW development kit. BREW is an environment for developing applications that run directly on Qualcomm phones. This is actually a pretty cool convergence idea. Much like PC gamers that can connect to each other over the Internet, games on cellphones ought to have some of the same capabilities. Imagine playing multiplayer games from anywhere that you can get a cell signal.

Monkeystone is a relatively new company started by a crew of game developers. The trick for this company won’t be creating the games — it’ll be generating revenue from handhelds. If these folks are clever, they’ll see how they can transform game distribution into a piece of the action in the cellular business. Cellular providers are looking for ways to increase usage and charge for the flow of bits — games are a great way to do that. Games that take advantage of the communications capabilities of the cell phone may be able to drive that increased usage and create new revenue sources for wireless providers.
